VS 2010 Beta 2 Help – Slow Going

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009
The Beta 2 help system is ok for small experiments. It’s the bleeding edge and I would strongly recommend waiting for a VS 2010 RC build (Release Candidate) before trying to move large help systems over.
If you want to play with the beta then please read these notes first

Things to share…

  • David Berman - Do Good Design [published by Pearson/Peachpit 2009]
David has published quite an unusual book on design. He says we all participate in design and have responsibility to do Good with it. David uses  my FAR product – that’s my link with him. Today he did a interview by phone with our local ABC radio station.

  • Agilent purchase Varian
As some of you know I work for Varian, inc in Melbourne, Australia. We all need a bread and butter job and I’ve been with them for over 20 yrs. Just over a week ago Varian Inc (about 3,600 employees world wide) were aquired by Agilent. In 1999 HP shed it’s original core business (as Agilent) to focus on it’s computer side. So if all the legal stuff goes through OK Varian inc will soon be known as Agilent. Staff are very positive about the merger. If you have Varian scientific equipment in your labs rest assured it will be quality service as usual.
  • H3 Merge Utility
The utility to convert a VS Help 2 projects to Help 3 format is shaping up well.  The web page is up but the utility wont be available until the VS 2010 Beta 2 is released.

Upgrading to Windows 7 RTM

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Last night I upgrade our 4 Vista PCs to Windows 7 RTM Ultimate.  Note there is no direct upgrade path for Windows XP. However MS provide tools to migrate your settings (you could upgrade to Vista first if you were really despite). And yes a clean install is always best, however I just don’t have the time for that. My dev machine however will eventually be a clean install.

Long time to install

All the upgrades took about 3 hrs to complete. One PC said ”Expanding Windows files 21%” for over 30mins. I was just about to give up and reboot when the install started to show life again. In the end all upgrades completed and ran OK.

Unciode, Zip & File Compare

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

We’ve learnt a lot while migrating our main application FAR to Unicode.

WinZip 12 & XCEED Zip compatibility

While upgrading FAR’s Zip support we found that the latest WinZip 12 & XCEED ZIP ActiveX 6.5 both supports Unicode file paths, but are incompatible with each other. Talking to the nice folks at XCEED they say they will be WinZip compatible in the next drop (which should be very soon). I’m hoping the WinZip people will also work on this problem.

Background: The PKZIP spec is old and hazy when it comes to Unicode paths. Unicode paths are stored in a separate list inside the Zip file. When WinZip opens an XCEED zip it cannot find the XCEED Unicode list and has to use the standard PKZIP list. So foreign language Unicode paths show up with names like Help?????.HxC.

Anyway a I’m glad that EXCEED are moving to fix this in their August release. Another component manufacturer ZipForge also say that their August release will support both the EXCEED and WinZip Unicode formats.

BTW I was delighted to see that WinZip 12 can now open .ISO files and optionally view files by folder.

Unicode File Compare

File Compare has not changed much in 10 years. VS WinDiff still only supports ANSI files and file paths.

While searching for a new File Compare program I came across Compare It!

Truely this is the best thing since sliced bread. Not only is it a pleasure to use and is fast as hell, but it fully supports Unicode and binary files. It even allows you to edit files inplace while you compare them. It can also compare files inside a Zip.

This product is outstanding and I highly recommend it. A must for every developer and help & web author.

N-Trig release new Windows 7 Touch drivers

Monday, May 11th, 2009

N-Trig (who make the touch hardware for DELL Latitude XT/XT2, HP TouchSmart TX2 computer screens) have finally released a new Windows 7  multi-touch driver/firmware update.

Unlike the last drop this is full featured, supporting Windows 64bit/32bit, and both Pen & Multi-Touch.

Combined with the many small improvements to Windows 7 RC, it is exceptionally fast and accurate to use. After installing, my DELL XT machine would not boot until I pressed F12 and told it where my hard drive was. Weird. After awhile this settled down and I no longer see the problem.

Warning: This is a Windows 7 only driver/firmware update. Do not install on Vista or XP system. Do not dual boot into Vista or XP. Do not try and install an older update over this (you must uninstall first) otherwise you can damage your PC hardware. Please read the release notes before installing.

The old N-Trig system (MTG) handled all gestures, and so could provide Multi-Touch support for Vista and XP.  The new MTM driver integrates natively with Windows 7 Multi-Touch system.  As a result we’re seeing huge improvements in responsiveness and speed.

Impressions:

  • A note to everyone on the Touch Team.. Congrats and Well Done! Beyond my expectations!
  • In Paint .. allows up to 4 fingers at a time (was more under MTG but much slower).  It’s perfect. Previously (last beta) there was a lag as you added more fingers.
  • Windows Photo Viewer… seem more responsive.
    - Small initial delay when you start to pan, pinch  or zoom, then it’s very responsive.
    - I’d like to see Two Finger tap to reset zoom.
  • I can now Touch the outer pixel edge of the desktop. So I can now grab windows that are maximized or close to the edge of the desktop. A bit of clever fudging going on.
    - Thanks for listening MS! Perfect.
  • Two finger Tap in IE 8 – Will Expand/Contract  (or restore to 100% zoom). –  Love it!
  • Finger + Tap other Finger = Context menu..  Nice!
  • Multi-Touch on Soft Keyboard has key repeat – Yeah! Almost feels like a real keyboard.
  • Latest FireFox 3 has Pinch zoom (no pan) & has basic gestures supported. Cool.
  • The new Pen Ink is wonderful. It’s really begining to feel like I’m writing with real ink!

Any one else seeing cool new stuff that catches your eye?

Windows 7 can run apps in true Windows XP Mode?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Wow this is ambitious. The idea is that Windows 7 will have deep compatibility mode where you can run an application in a kind of XP virtual machine mode box. I gather that Win 7 Pro/Ultimate users can download the required XPM bits free.

PS.

Microsoft’s Application Virtualization product (App-V) has been released to manufacturing and can be downloaded here:
So this is probably what Microsoft are looking at using for Windows 7. Instead of running an entire virtual desktop, it allows an application to run in a bubble. MS purchased V-App (formally SoftGrid) from Softricity.

Helpware to support MS Help 3.0

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Microsoft’s help 3 team have the enormous task of replacing the MS Help 2.x engine. Help 2 is used by Visual Studio 7/8/9.
More on MS Help 3 here:  http://www.helpmvp.com/webblog

The Sandcastle team posted this….

After we ship VS 2010 Beta 1, I will post an updated version of sandcastle that we will be using for shipping VS 2010 Beta 1 MSDN library. This will include the following features and several bug fixes:

1. Version we will be using to ship .NET Framework 4.0

2. Support for F# syntax

3. XSD documenter

4. Attributes supporting Microsoft Help 3 viewer.

I haven’t seen a release date for VS 2010 Beta 1.

Our plan is for Helpware Software to support Help 3. For now it’s Watch this Space.

Off to Microsoft Seattle for the MVP 2009 Summit (March 1-4). More news I’m sure after that.

Cheers
Rob

New From Microsoft

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

I’ve been watching the PDC2008 sessions on video. And yesterday I went to session at Microsoft Melbourne which talked about Silverlight, WPF and Windows 7.

PDC 2008 have several sessions on Windows 7.

First some interest statistics quoted yesterday
- Facebook are adding 10,000 new servers.
- Microsoft are currently adding 10,000 new servers every month.

Cool thing. During the opening session we did a pole using our mobiles and SMS. The results were shown graphically live on screen as the results came in. All via http://www.polleverywhere.com/

Cool stuff for Silverlight

  • Treeview and Graph charts.
  • Local Isolated storage (up to 1MB without prompting the user).
Here the app can cache images and files downloaded from the web.
  • Async download of files.
  • Access the browser DOM.

Silverlight 3.0 announced

Silverlight 2.0 was big (lots of new controls). Silverlight 3.0 may be even bigger.

  • H.264 production quality video.
  • GPU Hardware Acceleration.
  • True 3D support.

Internet Explorer 8

  • Isolated tabs (crash one and the rest keep running)
  • JavaScript Debugger (not to be outdone by FireFox Firebug)
  • Slices and Accelerators. Monitor slices of a web page.

Windows 7

Great new features. The polish we expected to see in Vista.
Looks like the version number for this next version of Windows will be 6.1.

  • Libraries. Group your music etc from different locations to a single virtual location (Library) for fast access and unified search. You can setup a library during installation if required.
  • Ribbon control added to WordPad and Paint. MS Ribbon API now ships with Windows 7.
  • Jump list. Access most MRU (most recently used) file lists from the taskbar right-click menu (even if a program not running). You may need to prepare existing apps to make use of this feature.
  • New improved task bar and hover previews. Close windows and interact with programs from the preview. You may need to prepare existing apps to make use of this feature.
  • UAC optimization. Now has 4 Levels of UAC control (for when apps are elevated to run in admin mode)
    1. UAC on full (same experience as in Vista).
    2. UAC on but do not dim the screen.
    3. Signed Microsoft application do not require a UAC prompt.
    4. UAC off.
Note: Skipping signed MS apps will reduce the number UAC prompts by round 70%.
  • Native Virtual Drive Support. Computer management (Storage > Disk Management) now has 2 new commands to Create and Load .VHD files. It also allows you to boot off a .VHD file.
  • W7 has a much smaller footprint than Vista. Apps like Photo Gallery; Live Messenger; Live Services will not ship with W7 but be available by download only.
  • Multi-touch. Touch screen support like you have seen in MS surface computing will be available in WIndows 7. Already HP have a touch screen on the market.
  • Better Ink and Speech.

Visual Studio 2010

  • UI/UA is now WPF. Richer UI.
  • Programmer can now add the ribbon controls to their apps (Including a WPF version of the Ribbon).

Spam-Be-Gone

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Something wonderful happened this week: Worldwide, the amount of spam email dropped by roughly two-thirds. How did this happen? A single hosting provider, McColo, was disconnected from the Internet.

Think about that for a second: One hosting company was apparently responsible for up to 66 percent of the worldwide spam generated per day. IronPort, a Cisco subsidiary, estimates that there are about 190 billion spam messages sent per day.

IE6/IE7 “Click to Activate” Gone

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Remember when the IE6/7 browser would not activate embedded controls (like flash and quicktime) on some web pages until you clicked the control? As you hovered over the control a tip revealed: “Click to activate and use this control”.

MS made the change in April 2006. Move foward to April 2008 and Microsoft have now licensed the technologies from Eolas to remove the “click to activate” behavior from Internet Explorer. Cool. So that’s why my IE7 no longer asks me to click to activate. If you are still seeing this behaviour then try using Windows Update.

The KB article and download for machines without Windows update is here:

Now available – FAR Beta Build 692

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Now available FAR Beta Build 692 – http://helpware.net/FAR/

  • Reports – Can now report: Total file count and Totals for matches and replacements.
  • Reports – Now prompts you to save changes when you generate a report (if changes were made).
  • Uncompressed help – Index list is now single click to open a page. Double-Click can still be used if you add UncompHelp_Index_DoubleClickToSelect=Y to the FAR settings.ini file.

Now available – FAR Beta Build 690

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Now available FAR Beta Build 690 – http://helpware.net/FAR/

  • Added Encoding Column to FAR file list (Can switch on/off via the View menu since reading the first part of all files can slow the list down first time). Displays file Encoding type = ANSI, UTF-8, UTF-16 LE/BE. Also: added EncodingColumnExtSkip= to settings.ini so user can specify Binary files to skip when populating the Encoding column.
  • FAR File List Sort: Usually when we sort we restore the selection to the same item. Now if the selected item is at the top of the list, then after we sort we reselect the top item.
  • The Search insert command $DT$[now] has been expanded $DT$[now:%format%] so that the current date/time can be formatted.
  • Fixed problem where the Backup command (run from Explorer) would not check the Enable Filter box and thus enable the Backup drop filter.

FAR Beta 687

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

FAR Beta 687 is up. http://helpware.net/FAR/

  • The main FAR file list now has an “Attrib” column (displays file attributes).
  • The Tag Editor is coming along. Now display tags from files and allows you to delete selected tags.

Feel free to send me your comments. Are there other changes you need (where FAR is lacking for you)?

Bill Henson

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Having a 13 year old daughter myself I couldn’t help but get involved with this debate.

In case you missed it, this debate has just exploded here in Australia. A prominent nude photographer, Bill Henson, has had his latest creation, a nude photo of a vulnerable looking 13 year old girl, published in the local news papers. The public outcry has been very loud indeed.  See Local News Report YouTube. The Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, added his voice calling the pictures “revolting”. Artists and personalities such as Cate Blanchett have spoken out against Rudd’s strong remarks. There has been a clamp down on art galleries as other photos of nude children are being taken down from display. The police are also involved attempting to track down the parents of the children in these photos.

You can see the actual photo in The Age newpaper. The photo is not explicit in anyway. Its really quite beautiful. This type of artistic nude has been around for a long time. What many do find troublesome is that a 13 year olds parents have approved their daughter to pose nude and have the photos published.

Actually the real problem (and why we are having this debate) is that times have changed. Once Upon A Time photos of nude children were tolerated because they were confined to the pages of art books & small art galleries. Those enjoying this type of art were a minority.  But now thanks to the modern computer and the Internet, an image can be duplicated and spread around the world in the blink of an eye.

The unsavoury side of the Internet is that it allows the many porn addicted users to emass huge pornographic image libraries. Pedifile rings use the Internet to collect nude images of young children. The police around the world are working hard to put these people behind bars. If you own a computer containing nude photos of young children, and are caught, then chances are you are on your way to jail. The community has become hyper sensitive  (if not outraged) by this explosion of porn and the new problems associated with protecting our children.

In a sense we now know that Bill Henson’s work is now fuelling the porn libraries of pedifiles. Of course this was not what Bill Henson intended. But… welcome to the new world.

Conclusion

It’s far more important to protected the lives of our little ones, than it is to gratify our desire for fine art.

A photo is very different from brushed artwork. It’s very personal. That image is now permanently archived  on the Internet. It will literally follow this woman for the rest of her teenage years (if not her life). It will be added to porn sites. Stupid young men, some from her school, will now share this image using their cell phones and computers. She may now be stalked, or sent lewd emails. So..  did her parents do the right thing? Did they protect her as they should?
